5 Tips to Survive Teething

Teething is a natural part of a baby’s development, but for some babies, it can make for a miserable few days for them and their parents. It is usually around 6 months when teething begins and the symptoms include: drooling, irritability, sore gums and wanting to chew on solid objects. The symptoms will last about 3-5 days and will go away once the teeth break through the gums.

According to the MayoClinic, “Many parents suspect that teething causes fever and diarrhea, but researchers say this isn't true. Teething can cause signs and symptoms in the mouth and gums — but not elsewhere in the body.”

The good news is there are ways to help ease your baby’s discomfort. Here are five tips from Web MD and the Mayo Clinic to help get through those trying teething times.

1.    Cool Object- A cold washcloth, spoon or teething ring can really help soothe your little one’s gums. Avoid giving your baby a frozen teething ring. The extreme cold can be harmful. Also, never tie a teething ring around a baby’s neck.

2.    Rub Their Gums-Gently massage the gums with a cool wet washcloth or your finger.

3.    Dry the Drool-Because your baby may drool more during this time, keep a cloth handy to wipe from your little one’s chin and neck. This will help prevent a rash.

4.    Hard Foods – If your baby is eating solid foods, you can offer up something like a carrot or peeled/chilled cucumber. Keep a close on your baby in case any pieces’ break off, which may pose as a choking hazard.

5.    Pain Relief – An over-the-counter pain medicine like children’s Tylenol, Advil or Motrin, may help if your baby is especially irritable. Avoid topical teething gels that contain benzocaine because of the potentially dangerous side effects.

As with many phases throughout a child’s life, remember, this too shall pass. Once the tooth breaks through, relief will be felt by all.
